OAT: É uma honra ter a sua participação no nosso Occultus Ars Tenebrae. Conte-nos um pouco sobre como era 2016 e este começo de 2017 para Nargaroth.
2016 foi um ano de novos começos e despedidas. Foi o fim da Europa que conhecemos e amamos e foi o início de uma nova vida compartilhada em outro lugar para mim. Agora em 2017 eu aceito novos desafios para melhorar minha vida e estou feliz em lançar o novo álbum do NARGAROTH.
OAT: Como Kanwulf (Ash) enfrentou a vida após o suicídio de seu melhor amigo em 1995?
Foi a primeira perda final que experimentei conscientemente. Isso me deixou sem chão por muito tempo, eu senti muita culpa devido às circunstâncias que aconteceram e eu estava praticamente sem planos e metas. Não desculpando nada, mas foi o momento decisivo que eu me isolei de relacionamentos próximos e fiz principalmente as minhas coisas ao invés de ferir os outros.
OAT: A banda tem planos de voltar ao Brasil no futuro?
Eu ficarei feliz em voltar, mas no momento eu não tenho certeza de como vou moldar e planejar a situação ao vivo no futuro com NARGAROTH. Como eu estou ficando mais velho eu me vejo cada vez menos como vocalista. Talvez eu mude para vocais e tocando violão, mas nada é definitivo por enquanto.
OAT: Qual é a opinião da banda sobre algumas pessoas considerando o Nargaroth uma banda nazista?
Como sempre foi comunicado: sua besteira absoluta.
OAT: O que Nargaroth achou do cover que o Nocturnal Depression fez da canção Seven Tears are Flowing to the River?
Muito bem feito e digno do original. Eu estava em contato com o vocalista da formação e lhe dei o mesmo feedback.
OAT: A banda lançou recentemente seu novo álbum intitulado "Era of Threnody", o que esse nome significa para a banda? De onde veio a inspiração para seu nome, letra e capa?
O próprio nome reflete como eu me senti na época em que os álbuns tratam tematicamente. No encarte do álbum escrevi no fundo: Cada fase da vida tem suas próprias lutas, tentações ou aberrações e a maioria de nós sente um desejo de algo. Algo que cura ou cumpre nossa vida e às vezes nos deixa em desespero.
Os eventos, cujo processo de superação são refletidos neste álbum, me levaram a um estilo de vida nômade auto-imposto, que me levou ao redor do mundo - sem-teto, sem rumo. Em breves períodos de pausa, eu morava em regiões vulcânicas rurais do México e no isolamento de reservas indianas canadenses, onde as letras deste álbum foram escritas.
Minha noção pessoal é que há poucas formas musicais de expressão com um temperamento masculino em sua qualidade emocional que eu acho atraente. Uma vez que considero o arquétipo tradicional do Flamenco uma dessas poucas expressões, tenho vindo a acompanhar a ideia de incorporá-lo na minha música por um bom tempo. Mas as habilidades necessárias de alto nível de guitarra impediram sua realização por um longo tempo. Quando fiz um concerto em Paris em 2013, mencionei minha idéia a Bernth, que - entre outras coisas - estava estudando guitarra de jazz em uma academia musical em Viena e pertencia à programação ao vivo do NARGAROTH. Mais tarde, quando - independentemente um do outro - ambas as ordens familiares de nossas vidas caíram, nós nos juntamos para realizar este projeto. O flamenco original, sendo a música de pessoas nômades, desabrigadas e rurais, fundiu-se perfeitamente na minha história de vida e na história por trás deste álbum.
Levei mais de um ano para superar minha tristeza e os fatores de fundo que levaram aos eventos ocorridos em 2014/15 e assumir o controle do meu destino novamente. Durante os momentos de tumulto emocional, minhas habilidades criativas são limitadas, porque a melancolia - que eu completamente sucumbo a - toma o controle total de mim. Eu só tento em retrospectiva descobrir como colocar minha experiência para a música, razão pela qual este álbum teve dois anos de atraso. Todas as músicas se referem a experiências reais e eventos que ocorreram principalmente em Las Vegas e no Deserto de Mojave.
OAT: O que Nargaroth pensa sobre a cena e novas bandas no metal extremo?
Hm, o que eu acho... (?). Nada de bom e eu acho que pelo menos metade da "cena" pensa o mesmo sobre mim. Então estamos parados. Eu não escuto nada no Black Metal desde 2000/2001. É claro que de vez em quando alguém me dá seu CD ou alguém me passa um link para uma música e às vezes eu checo, mas nada realmente me chamou a atenção.
Ouvir Black Metal lembra-me de sua morte e que - para mim - é algo bastante torturante como a própria arte é muito cara para mim. Se eu escuto, o que é tão raro que não é mais do que talvez 4 ou 5 vezes por ano, alguns velhos favoritos meus, então trazem memórias doloridas e o conhecimento do que o Black Metal se tornou. Isso agrava demais. E coisas novas não me interessam. Não importa se é considerado como legit ou faggy pela cena. Eu tenho a minha opinião, eu guardo para mim e eu não participo de qualquer círculo na cena Black Metal mais. O metal está no meu sangue, mas não as exigências dos forasteiros!
OAT: Quais foram as suas inspirações para a sua criação?
Estou sempre apenas inspirado em eventos da vida que me afetaram. É minha maneira de lidar com impactos pesados em minha vida. Eu não bebo nem uso drogas para "aliviar a minha dor". Isso não funciona para mim. Tenho de passar por um momento difícil com 'um olho aberto'. E isso não acontece quando você entorpece seus sentidos. Quando eu passo através dos tempo difíceis, eu começo a escrevê-los em forma de poemas - e, eventualmente, escrever canções que se tornam um álbum.
OAT: Qual é a sua visão de Black Metal hoje?
Não quero responder. Mas eu posso te contar minha idéia ou como eu gostaria de ver o Black Metal - e eu simplesmente não me importo que isso soe ridículo para muitas crianças no Black Metal. Para mim, Black Metal ainda seria uma arte exclusiva, não disponível para a maioria das pessoas. Nós ainda teríamos fitas artesanais com 4-Track, talvez 8-track gravado arte preta circulando pelo mundo por negociação de fita ou encomendado a partir de listas de fita distribuídos em shows subterrâneos. Nós tínhamos revistas nascidas de papel, grampeadas com a mão, em preto e branco que governariam a propaganda no Subterrâneo. Nós faríamos e diríamos o que quer que nós quiséssemos e nenhum debate politicamente correto nos incomodaria nunca. Shows deBlack Metal seriam eventos Underground onde metallions atenderiam, celebrariam o show em todos os sentidos e nenhum espaço seria seguro para indivíduos fracos.
OAT: Qual é a sua visão para a música em geral, o que você costuma ouvir?
Eu olho para a autenticidade que é outra razão pela qual eu deixei de estar no Black Metal, onde na maioria das vezes você tem apenas imagem, temas de fantasia ou exaltações, falsa auto-representação. Quero experiências da vida real refletidas na arte e na música. Isso geralmente nunca é o caso no (Black) Metal. E isso é ok para alguma extensão, como a arte deve expressar ou refletir também o que não pode ser vivido ou expressado de outra forma. Mas essa não é a minha abordagem. Portanto, considero Nargaroth diferente de muitas bandas de Metal genérico e muito autêntico, devido ao fato de que estou lidando com mais eventos da vida real em vez de promover tópicos artificiais. Minha autenticidade inclui meus fracassos, que em parte têm qualidades vergonhosas, também. Por isso - então eu suponho - os fãs se conectam muito bem com a minha música, pois pode refletir suas próprias experiências de vida real e auto-reflexões. Por outro lado esse fato me faz um alvo para caras com uma abordagem diferente no Black Metal ou que são simplesmente guerreiros na Internet.
OAT: Qual foi o momento mais marcante do Nargaroth para você?
Quando a falsidade ridicularizou mentiras e acusações da cena feita em minha vida privada e quase destruída. Sua irritante luta para expor toda a merda dos outros, criar e 'corajosamente' enviá-lo em cartas anônimas para o seu trabalho. Foi um dos momentos decisivos que eu decidi dar um foda-se sobre qualquer cena que é uma cadela ingrata, às vezes.
OAT: Sabemos que o nome Nargaroth veio da palavra Narg que está relacionado com uma expressão que significa natureza, mas o que esse nome significa para a banda?
É o nome do instrumento que me ajuda a lidar com eventos da vida que me fizeram lutar, repensar minhas decisões ou simplesmente me afetar.
Sobre os nomes de bandas eu li toneladas de besteira em todo o lugar e me pergunto por que e como outros, chamados de fora, podem afirmar saber alguma coisa e reivindicar a verdade. Ridiculos. O próprio nome não tem significado traduzível. Não é tirado de qualquer livro, jogo ou maldito fantasma do Senhor dos Anéis, que eu tropecei não antes que os filmes de Hollywood saíram, como eu não sou muito pronto de qualquer maneira. Eu ouvi ou li em entrevistas de revista de metal dos anos 90 que algumas bandas de BM pediram emprestado seus nomes desta saga, mas nunca se sentiram interessados o suficiente para dar uma olhada mais de perto. Mesmo agora não é nada, mas um bom filme de entretenimento para mim.
No processo de encontrar um nome adequado houveram várias tentativas. Um dos mais anteriores ao nome final foi NARGFALK o que eu descartei devido a proximidade fonética para a palavra falcão. De volta no dia eu realmente gostei das primeiras saídas de GORGOROTH e eu levei a última sílaba - ROTH e se tornou NARGAROTH. Que simplesmente é espectacular. Qualquer outra explicação ou alegações são mentira absoluta e por isso simplesmente falso.
Oat: Nargaroth tem uma canção chamada The Day Burzum Killed Mayhem, que é uma homenagem a Varg Vikernes (Burzum) e Euronymous (Mayhem), Conte-nos mais sobre sua opinião sobre os dois guerreiros Black Metal.
Esta é apenas uma outra ficção desenvolvida pela cena apesar da minha antiga rejeição a esta falsa suposição. Mas a repetição é o ópio para os estúpidos, portanto, novamente: Esta canção trata de uma das ocorrências mais trágicas dentro da história do Black Metal. Era suposto lembrar os eventos trágicos que ocorreram com o assassinato de Øystein Aarseth, mas a cena em 2001 levou-o novamente como uma ferramenta para dividir a cena - assim como o evento original fez uma vez volta em 1993. Mesmo os caras de MAYHEM mesmos interpretaram mal, como eu tinha que aprender, mas isso eu não esperava de forma diferente. Esta música nunca foi uma homenagem a Vikernes nem uma glorificação do assassinato, embora todos em torno destes dias em 1993 devem admitir, que teve um enorme impacto e foi uma espécie de declaração, que o Black Metal era mais do que apenas um outro gênero de Metal. Eu pessoalmente vi esta música mais como um conto, um anseio para contar, que descreveu os vários acontecimentos durante esta tragédia e suas conseqüências entre a cena. Mas talvez a natureza deste tópico fosse dividida. Para muitos seguidores Black Metal hoje em dia este evento não é nada mais do que um distante, acontecimento distante na história de desvanecimento e muitas vezes negada do Black Metal. Mas para alguns dos anciãos foi algo que mudou e até redefiniu a percepção de uma arte.
Meus pensamentos pessoais a esses dois protagonistas são irrelevantes, como eu não lido ou acompanho qualquer um deles. Com todo o respeito devido a ambos os seus legados, MAYHEM nunca foi muito do meu gosto musical e BURZUM o último lançamento que eu revisei foi Hliðskjálf quando saiu. Eu não ouvi nada depois deste (eu sempre gostei de suas músicas ambient de qualquer maneira) e não tenho a intenção de nem seguir nada de suas atividades recentes. Eu só tenho outras preferências de vida.
OAT: Nargaroth é uma banda que está na cena do Black Metal destruindo tudo com sua grande sonoridade desde o ano de 1996, que conselho a banda tem para dar a quem está começando agora na cena do metal extremo?
Meu 'conselho' pode estar desatualizado, porque hoje em dia com um mercado inundado, muitas bandas e internet precisa provavelmente de outras estratégias do que de volta no dia. Em geral eu diria: ser autêntico e deixar espaço para erros e falhas. Torna-o mais real e compreensível. Não faça o que as revistas ou o gerente querem lhe dizer. Pode trazer-lhe talvez mais rápido à primeira página de uma revista, mas isso não significa automaticamente que você tem de fato o tamanho ou base de fãs real de uma banda estabelecida. Essas bandas são principalmente grupos de imagens inchadas que serão esquecidas. São meus dois centavos.
Oat: Qual foi o show mais memorável já feito pela banda durante todo o seu período de atividade?
Eu não tenho apenas um, como os momentos memoráveis são de qualidade diferente. Eu amei o show no DARKNESS RISING FEST na Sérvia porque eu tive a primeira vez diversão no palco. I amei o concerto em Hanoi / Vietnam, que não foi apenas o primeiro show BM internacional, mas também foi um memorável momento para mim. Quase todos os shows da América Latina são memoráveis para mim, especialmente Bogotá/Colômbia por seu amor e Ibagué (Iba-Hell)/Colômbia, Cidade da Guatemala, bem como Tegucigalpa/Honduras e San Salvador/El Salvador por sua loucura violenta. Eu amei os shows em Moscou/Rússia devido a minhas raízes russas e a triste ainda que hospitaleira alma russa ... esta lista seria muito maior. Mas os momentos mais memoráveis são, quando os fãs convidam a fazer parte de sua vida pessoal. Me leve para visitar o túmulo de seus entes queridos, peça para ir a um casamento, um batismo ou um convidado em um funeral - ou simplesmente me ofereça um lugar para dormir ou me traga comida quando estou viajando. São todas as minhas memórias.

2016 was a year of new beginnings and farewells. It was the end of the Europe we know and love and it was start of a new shared life elsewhere for me. Now in 2017 I except new challenges to improve my life and am glad to release the NARGAROTH album.
OAT: How has Kanwulf (Ash) faced life after the suicide of his best friend in 1995?
It was the first ultimate loss I experienced consciously. It threw me off track a big deal, I felt a lot of guilt due the circumstances it happened and I was pretty much without plan and goals. Not excusing anything, but it was the defining moment I isolated myself from close relationships and did mostly my thing while hurting others.
OAT: Does the band have plans to return to Brazil in the future?
I will be pleased to return, yet at the moment I am not sure and certain how I will shape and plan the future live situation with NARGAROTH. As I am getting older I see myself less and less as stage humping singer. Maybe I'll change to vocals and live guitar playing, but nothing is final for now.
OAT: What is the band's opinion about some people considering the Nargaroth a Nazi band?
As it always been and communicated: its utter bullshit.
OAT: What did Nargaroth think of the cover that the Nocturnal Depression made of the song Seven Tears are Flowing to the River?
Very well done and worthy of the original. I was in contact with the formation's singer and gave him the same feedback.
OAT: The band recently released their new album titled "Era of Threnody" what does this name mean to the band? Where did the inspiration for your name, lyrics and cover come from?
The name itself reflects how I felt in the time the albums deals with thematically. In the albums booklet I write to the background of the album itself: Each stage of one’s life has its very own struggles, temptations or aberrations and most of us feels a longing for something. Something that heals or fulfills our life and sometimes leaves us in despair. The events, whose overcoming process is reflected in this album, drove me into a self-imposed nomadic lifestyle, which took me around the world – homeless, aimless. In brief periods of pause, I lived in rural volcanic regions of Mexico and in the seclusion of Canadian Indian reserves, where the lyrics to this album were written.
My personal notion is that there are only few musical forms of expression with a masculine temper in their emotional quality that I find appealing. Since I consider a traditional archetype of Flamenco one of these few expressions, I have been following up to the idea of incorporating it into my music for quite a while. But the necessary high level guitar skills have prevented its realization for a long time. When I did a concert in Paris in 2013, I mentioned my idea to Bernth, who – among other things – was studying Jazz guitar at a musical academy in Vienna and belonged to NARGAROTH´s live lineup. Later, when – independently of each other – both of our lives’ familiar orders fell apart we joined to realize this project. Original flamenco, being the music of nomadic, homeless and rural people, merged seamlessly into my life story and the history behind this album.
It took me well over a year to overcome my mournfulness and the background factors that led to the events occurring in 2014/15 and to take control of my fate again. During times of emotional uproar, my creative abilities are limited, because melancholy – which I completely succumb to – takes full control of me. I only try in hindsight to find out how to put my experience to music, which is why this album is two years late. All of the songs refer to actual experiences and events mostly having taken place in Las Vegas and the Mojave Desert.
OAT: What does Nargaroth think about the Scene and new bands in the metal scene?
Hm, what shall I think..(?). Nothing good and I guess at least half of the “scene” thinks the same about me. So we're even. I do not listen to anything in Black Metal since maybe 2000/2001. Of course once in a while someone gives me his CD or someone passes me a link to a song and sometimes I check it out, but nothing really caught my attention.
Listening to Black Metal reminds me of its demise and that – to me – is something pretty torturing as the art itself is very dear to me. If I do listen, what is so rare that its not more than maybe 4 or 5 times per year, to some old favorites of mine, then it brings aching memories and the knowledge what Black Metal has become. That aggravates too much. And new stuff doesn't interests me at all. No matter if it is considered as legit or faggy by the scene. I have my opinion, I keep it to myself and I don't participate on any Black Metal scene circus anymore. Metal is in my blood, but not outsiders demands!
OAT: What were your inspirations for your creation?
I am always and only inspired by life events that affected me. Its my way to deal with heavy impacts in my life. I don't drink nor do I drugs to 'ease my pain'. That doesn't work for me. I must somehow go through a hard time with 'an open eye'. And this don't happen when you numb your senses. When I made through the hard time, I start to write it down in form of poems – and eventually write songs which become an album.
OAT: What is your vision of Black Metal today?
I don't want to answer. But I can tell you my idea or how I'd like to see Black Metal – and I simply don't care that it'll sound ridicules to many kids in Black Metal. If it where for me, Black Metal would still be an exclusive art, not available for most people. We still would have handmade tapes with 4-Track, maybe 8-track recorded black art circling through the world by tape trading or ordered from tape lists handed out at underground shows. We'd would have paper-born, hand-stapled, black/white magazines ruling the propaganda in the Underground. We would do and say whatever we want to and no political correctness debate would ever bother us. Black Metal concerts would be Underground events where metallions meet, celebrate the show in every way and no safe-space for feeble individuals.
OAT: What is your vision for music in general, what do you usually hear?
I look for authenticity what is another reason why I stopped being into Black Metal where most of the time you have only image, fantasy topics or bloated, untrue self-representation. I want real life experiences reflected in the art and music. That's mostly never the case in (Black) Metal. And that's ok to some extend, as art shall express or reflect also what cant be lived or expressed otherwise. But that's not my approach. Therefore I consider Nargaroth different from many generic Metal bands and pretty authentic, due the fact that I'm dealing with more real life events instead of promoting artificial topics. My authenticity includes my failures, who partly have shameful qualities, as well. By this – so I assume – fans connect very well with my music as it might reflect their own real life experiences and self-reflections. On the other hand this fact makes me a target for guys with a different approach on Black Metal or are simply internet warriors.
OAT: What was the most striking moment of Nargaroth for you?
When untrue and ridicules lies and accusations from the scene made into my private life and almost wrecked it. Its annoying to fight off bullshit others create and 'bravely' send it in anonymous letters to your job. It was one of the defining moments I decided to give a F*** about any scene who's a ungrateful bitch at times.
OAT: We know that the name Nargaroth came from the word Narg- is related to an expression that means nature, but what does this name mean to the band?
Its the name of the instrument that helps me to deal with life events that made me struggle, re-think my decisions or simply affects me.
Regarding the band names I read tons of bullcrap all over the place and wonder why and how others, so called outsiders, can claim to know anything and claim the truth. Ridicules. The name itself has NO translatable meaning. Its not taken from any book, game or goddamn Lord of Rings fantasy, that I stumbled across not earlier than the Hollywood movies came out, as I am not much of a ready anyway. I heard or read in metal magazine interviews of the 90's that certain BM bands borrowed their names from this saga, but never felt interested enough to take a closer look. Even now its nothing but a good movie entertainment for me.
In the process of finding an adequate name where several attempts. One of the most previous to the final name was NARGFALK what I discarded due the phonetic closeness to the word falcon. Back in the day I really liked the first outputs of GORGOROTH and I took the last syllabus -ROTH and it became NARGAROTH. That simply and unspectacular. Any other explanation or claims are utter bullshit and by this simply untrue.
OAT: Nargaroth has a song called The Day Burzum Killed Mayhem, which is a tribute to Varg Vikernes (Burzum) and Euronymous (Mayhem), Tell us more about your opinion about this two Black Metal warriors.
This just another fiction developed by the scene despite my longstanding rejection of this false assumption. But repetition is the opium for the stupid, therefore again: This song deals with one of the most tragic occurrences within Black Metal history. It was supposed to remember the tragic events that occurred with the murder of Øystein Aarseth, but the scene back in 2001 took it again as a tool to divide the scene – just like the original event did once back in 1993. Even the guys of MAYHEM itself misinterpreted it, as I had to learn, but this I didn't expected differently. This song never was a homage to Vikernes nor a glorification of the murder, although everyone around in these days in 1993 must admit, that it had a huge impact and was a kind of statement, that Black Metal was more than just another Metal genre. I personally saw this song more as a tale, a yearn to tell on, that described the several happenings during this tragic and its aftermath among the scene. But maybe this topic’s nature was meant to divide. For many Black Metal followers nowadays this event is nothing more than a far, distant happening in the fading and often denied Black Metal history. But for some of the elders it was something that changed and even redefined the perception of an art.
My personal thoughts to these two protagonists are irrelevant, as I don't deal or follow up with any of them. With all due respect to their both legacy, MAYHEM was never too much of my musical taste and BURZUM last output I reviewed was Hliðskjálf when it came out. I haven't heard anything after this one (I always liked his ambient songs better anyway) and don't intend to nor do I follow anything of his recent activities. I just have other life preferences.
T: Nargaroth is a band that is in the scene of the Black Metal destroying everything with its great sonority since the year of 1996, What advice the band has to give to who is beginning now in the Extreme Metal Scene?
My 'advice' might be outdated, because nowadays with a flooded market, too many bands and internet it needs probably other strategies than back in the day. In general I'd say: be authentic and leave room for mistakes and failures. It makes it more real and comprehensible. Don't do what magazines or manager want to tell you. It might bring you maybe quicker on the front page of a magazine but that doesn't mean automatically that you have indeed the size or real fan base of a established band. These bands are mostly bloated image groups that will be forgotten. That are my two cents.
OAT: What was the most memorable show ever made by the band during their entire period of activity?
I don't have just one, as the memorable moments are from different quality. I loved the show at the DARKNESS RISING FEST in Serbia because I had the first time fun on stage. I loved the concert in Hanoi/Vietnam, which was not only the first international BM act, but also was a memorable moment for me. Almost all Latin American Shows are memorable to me, especially Bogota/Colombia for their love and Ibagué (Iba-Hell)/Colombia, Guatemala City as well as Tegucigalpa/Honduras and San Salvador/El Salvador for their violent madness. I loved the shows in Moscow/Russia due my Russian roots and the mournful yet hospitality Russian soul...this list would be much longer. But the most memorable moments are, when fans invite to be part of their personal life, e.g. take me to visit the grave of loved ones, ask me to be a wedding, baptism or funeral guest – or simply offer me a place to sleep or get me some food when I am traveling. They're all my memories.
